I really enjoyed working on this playlist and presenting it alongside Reflections of the Buddha at the Pulitzer. Some artists and labels that sprang to mind immediately, played heavily into the final mix, such as artists Four Tet, Tycho and Moby; and labels like Ghostly International, Warp, and Om.

Peruse the setlist below and please support the artists if you enjoy what you hear. Reflections of the Buddha continues to run through March 10.

What better way to celebrate the upcoming release of the movie, Tron: Legacy, than with a black light dance party? On Thursday December 9 at the Firebird, KDHX DJs Johnny Orr (The Love Mix) and Kate (Beep Beep Boop Boop), along with DJ Coreyography, will help the people of Saint Louis get ready for Tron: Legacy by spinning dance music with a neon glow.

The event will feature glow-in-the-dark Tron-styled body art by Firecracker Press‘ Matty Kleinberg, giveaways (including copies of the graphic novel, Tron: Betrayal provided by Star Clipper), Tron video game, and of course some Daft Punk.

Show is 9pm to 1am, 18+. Cover at door is $5 with proceeds going to 88.1 KDHX.

Disney has been promoting Tron: Legacy (in theaters December 17) for over 3 years. No wonder we’re excited! Now I just have to find a black motorcycle helmet…

I’ve mentioned La Blogotheque’s Take Away Shows before, and here’s a video project in the same vein: Not to Be Reproduced. Similar to the Take Away Shows, NTBR posts video of performances in an intimate setting. While focusing on the arts in general, NTRB is a place to watch a variety of videos, from Lykke Li’s revision of Rick Ross’ “Hustlin” to a video work featuring Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth and actress Chloe Sevigny. While it looks like they’re just beginning, I hope they stick to it.

Phew! Last week was a busy one as I had my usual radio show and subbed for two others. My take on the Nomadic Reverie show on October 21, my own here, and sitting in for the Remedy October 25.

Check the Modular Podcast…pretty, colorful letters you just want to hug, and mixes by Cut Copy and many others. Also includes cool videos of the Presets and Ladyhawke.

Check the Gopher Remix of Ladyhawke’s “Paris is Burning” from her Paris is Burning EP here.

Radioclit and Esau Mwamawaya are giving away a mixtape on November 1. Peep their re-version of Vampire Weekend’s “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa:”

Here’s the playlist and link to stream this past Wednesday night’s show on KDHX, which included fine artists such as Tussle, Terry Lynn, Jamie Lidell; and longtime favorites, Hefner and Nightmares on Wax.

I’ll also be DJing at the Royale this Sunday night from 9pm to midnight. Little less dance, little more soul, world, and downtempo. Although it’s my birthday party that night as well, so you never know…

And humbly, a final note: please consider pledging your support to electronic and hip hop music in Saint Louis by donating to KDHX Community Media during my radio show next Wednesday, October 8, from 10pm to midnight. You can donate by going to KDHX.org or calling 314-664-3688.

…And with fall comes the excitement of fall tours. Just when we thought the summer was a busy time, we realize it’s time to get down to business and go see some music. Aside from the travesty of MSTRKRFT stopping just short of Saint Louis, I’m trying to keep up with these:

Vampire Weekend

Wednesday, September 7 at the Pageant

You usually hear bands speed up on songs, if anything. But there were at least a few songs here where it seemed obvious Vampire Weekend was actually slowing down to accommodate one or more band member’s ability to keep up with the song live. (My piano teacher echoes in my mind: “do it again. Do it again. Do it faster.”) They did play some songs not on their full-length album, which were a nice change from the studio sound of their album performances. I, like many, could not get enough of their self-titled album, so it was fun to watch even if there wasn’t much variety or stretching of the songs. Between the singer continuously bouncing on his tiptoes, and the bass player having some crazy stretch armstrong dance moves, they were entertaining.

DJ Dan

Saturday, September 20 at Dante’s

I was thoroughly excited when I found out DJ Dan was coming into town, especially after his somewhat quiet show over Memorial Day Weekend earlier this year way the F out at Home Nightclub. I interviewed Dan for my radio show, you can listen here:

Not only did he tear the place up with huge beats and some pretty sly mash-ups, he played a killer remix of Shiny Toy Guns‘ “Don’t Cry Out.” There aren’t really any proper remixes of STG released, but I’ve been waiting to hear one in a club regardless. This made my night, aside from being to hang out with Dan for a bit.

Also, a fun music video podcast concept: have some sort of credibility that allows you to film bands performing in random settings. Think the Wombats on a boat, Vampire Weekend in a van, Pigeon John at a bus stop…you get the idea. It’s called the Take Away Shows, of course.

Until there’s more present inside this future-

Hark, the herald angels sing! I have a blog. Let’s plan to use this for musical things. This site is partially to support my radio show, Beep Beep Boop Boop on KDHX, and also to engage in other conversations about music.

I feel as though I should give a little background – CHECK IT!

It all began in a banana-yellow Lincoln Town Car with 8-track tapes: the BeeGees, Hall & Oates, Wham!, and Barry Manilow are most prominent in my mind. It was a revelation when I found out Hall & Oates’ “Every Time You Go Away” gave a piece of me – instead of meat – with you.

It’s all uphill from there. There will always be more music than spare time, and I could go crazy trying to be hip on the newest band or divulge into sub-sub-sub genres of house music…when really, as long as I have the ability to listen, I will just enjoy being a music listener.

With that said, here is a place to communicate about music, and the occasional event or bad driver.
